I'm Rebecca, but my students call me Miss Becky. Rebecca's Piano Studio was established in 1986.

I have over 32 years of experience teaching piano lessons, in the Fairfax Virginia. I teach students ranging from beginner to level 8 in the Alfred series. I recommend that students be at least 7 years old to begin piano lessons. I also work with adult students.

Hi there! I'm Rebecca

I believe piano lessons should be enjoyable, entertaining, and academic all at the same time. I want lessons to be a positive experience for every student, something they will remember for a lifetime.

I spent one year working in a large piano studio with Glee Smith in Mount Vernon Ohio, 1986-1987. Glee Smith hired three piano teachers every year to help her teach piano students in the area. She taught me how to run a piano studio as a professional business, what methods to use, how to prepare students for recitals, and how to work with parents and students. In 1987 I opened my own business and called it Rebecca's Piano Studio, located in Mount Vernon, Ohio. That became a full time business within a year with 55 students coming for lessons each week. In 1991 I got married and relocated the business to Falls Church, Virginia. In 1995 we bought a home in Greenbriar and I have been teaching piano lessons in Fairfax since that time. During the years when my children were small, the business was part time. As they got older, I took on more students each year until it became the full time operation that it is now, teaching full time.

I have attended two Piano Pedagogy Seminars at George Mason University. I usually attend piano teacher workshops when they are made available at local music stores. I have had some Suzuki training, to learn how to teach students to perform music from memory. I have had over three years of additional training to teach higher levels of piano students. I now teach lessons up to level 8, an advanced level in the Alfred method.

My three years of advanced piano instruction in order to teach levels 5-8 in the Alfred Method was with Juliana Kuo who formerly lived in Fairfax but moved to Las Vegas a few years ago. Juliana was awarded the 2018 Top Piano Teacher Award in Las Vegas in January, 2019.

I believe piano lessons should be enjoyable, entertaining, and academic all at the same time. Lessons are a serious business and it's important to get all the necessary skills going to create a skillful and educated pianist. But at the same time, I feel that lessons need to be fun and creative. I want lessons to be a positive experience for every student, something they will remember for a lifetime.

I recommend that students be at least 7 years old or in first grade before beginning private piano lessons. This is what my professors in college recommended and after 32 years of teaching piano, I have seen their words of wisdom come true. I teach all ages, 7 years old to adults.
After 7 years old, any age is a great time to start taking formal piano lessons. It’s never too late to start, either.

I offer students prizes and awards for meeting their goals. There are three chances to win a prize at every lesson, for practice, a flashcard game, and music bingo game. Students may receive a big prize out of the big prize box for completing a level of books. Students also have an opportunity to win a Perfect Attendance Award. I have a chart at the front of the studio where students can keep track of their attendance. If they have a sticker on the board from the time they start until the day of the recital, they may receive a Perfect Attendance Award at the recital. I find that prizes are very motivating for students. Positive reinforcement for a desired behavior goes a long way with most children.

I teach several styles of music that students can choose from for their lessons. I teach classical, romantic, baroque, jazz, ragtime, popular, and
current music. Before the holidays, we work on Christmas or Chanukah music if families wish for that. I use both a grand piano and a digital piano for lessons, which allow for the advantages of both kinds
of playing, and different styles of music. I encourage students to try to play from many styles of music to find the style that they like to play the most. We focus on their main interest and then work on secondary choices of music. I encourage students to play duets from the very beginning, so that they get used to listening to another player right from the start.

Lessons are one on one with the teacher, 30 minutes once a week. Practice is necessary to make good progress. The amount of recommended practice varies with the level of the student. For new beginners I recommend a minimum of 10 minutes a day, 5 days a week. For higher levels, the time is increased. The time of each weekly lesson is fairly strict, going by an atomic clock to be sure every student is getting about a 30 minute class. Sometimes it takes a minute or two of transition time between lessons, so please allow for that. It is most helpful if parents wait until after lessons are over for the day to ask me any questions, so that lesson time can be focused on the students. I am available during daytime time hours before lessons start to answer questions then as well. A full academic year calendar is usually drawn up in April for the following year, including upcoming recital dates. As soon as FCPS has their calendar published, I get the studio calendar prepared for the coming year and sent out to parents.

We have two recital dates a year, one in January and one in June. We will be holding the performances at Christ Presbyterian Church. Students are encouraged to memorize their music, however it is not required. They may use their book if they wish to. Each student has the opportunity to play one song at the recital. Due to the number of students in lessons, the children are divided into two groups, offering two times for parents to choose from for their student's performance time.

I host a Student Movie Party twice a year. Students are invited to bring their pillow or favorite blanket to sit on and they get to watch a fun movie together at my house. I supply the popcorn, snacks, and drinks. It's
a tradition that began many years ago and the students love it. I like hosting them because it allows students to meet and get to know each other before they see one another at the big recital performances. The dates of the parties are announced in the monthly newsletter.
